By Matthew Lyons ‘06 Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior forward Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Quebec/Stanstead College) tallied two goals and freshman Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y./Gunnery School) stood tall with 31 saves as Saint Michael’s College defeated Wesleyan College, 4-1, in men’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.
Sophomore defenseman Nick Dancey (Anaheim, Calif./American International College) and freshman Jared Silver (Montreal, Quebec/Tabor Academy) also scored for Saint Michael’s, which won its third straight contest and improves to 6-8-0 overall and 4-6-0 in ECAC East play.
Senior captain Brian Maynes (Germantown, Md.) tallied the lone goal for the Cardinals, while classmate Jim Panczykowski (Cattaraugus, N.Y.) turned aside 21 shots for Wesleyan (7-5-3, 5-3-3 NESCAC).
Quenneville opened the scoring at 3:50 of the first period with assists from junior Nick Towne (Milton, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and sophomore Alex Watts (Cheshire, Conn./Berkshire School). The goal was Quenneville’s 112th career point, moving past Josh Ralph ’00 into seventh place in Purple Knights’ history.
The Cardinals answered back three minutes later when Maynes slipped one past Jackson. The tie was short-lived, however, as late in the period Dancey gave the Purple Knights the lead for good on a shot from the blue line that eluded Panczykowski.
Silver gave Saint Michael’s a two-goal cushion halfway through the second period, as he used a nifty move to beat Panczykowski shorthanded.
The third period was marked by great Saint Michael’s penalty killing and strong goaltending by Jackson. In just his fourth career start, Jackson made several key stops, including robbing Wesleyan freshman Taylor Evans (Milton, Mass.) on the doorstep eight minutes into the frame. Quenneville completed the scoring at the 12:31 mark on a centering pass from fellow senior Mike Duffy (Malone, N.Y./Nepean Raiders).
Saint Michael’s looks to increase its winning streak to four games as the Purple Knights host Trinity College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
