ANCTIL, QUENNEVILLE LEAD PURPLE KNIGHTS PAST TUFTS

Courtesy Tufts Sports Information (802) 654-2537MALDEN, Mass. – Junior Matt Anctil (Wolfeboro, NH) and senior Justin Quenneville (Montreal, QUE) both scored a pair of goals to lead the visiting Saint Michael’s College Purple Knights (2-1) to a 6-4 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos (0-2) in NESCAC/ECAC East men’s college hockey action on Saturday night.
Anctil’s goals came consecutively late in the first period. His second was shorthanded with just 12 seconds left in the stanza to give Saint Michael’s a 3-1 lead. Tufts needed less than two minutes into the second period to tie the score at 3-3. Junior John Hurd (Arlington, MA) scored his second of the game just 11 seconds into the period and sophomore Matt McCarthy (Medfield, MA) scored a brilliant goal at 1:47, maneuvering through the Knights’ defense for his first of the year.
Quenneville’s first goal at 12:39 of the second period on a powerplay gave Saint Michael’s the lead for good at 4-3. The Knights pushed the margin to 5-3 on a strike by senior Mike Duffy (Malone, NY) five minutes into the third. Jumbo sophomore Jack Thompson (Melrose, MA), fresh out of the penalty box after a 10-minute misconduct, knocked one in at 10:32 of the third to close the gap to 5-4. Another powerplay goal by Quenneville, Saint Michael’s third man-advantage goal of the game, at 14:49 restored the two-goal lead and was the game’s final goal.
The Jumbos also scored three powerplay goals in a game featuring 20 penalties. Freshman Erik Smith (Warwick, RI) took the win in the Saint Michael’s net with 27 saves. Senior Ben Crapser (Paxton, MA) made 29 saves in a losing cause for the Jumbos. The victory was the first in five tries for the Knights over Tufts.
Duffy finished with a goal and two assists for SMC. Sophomore Alex Watts (Cheshire, CT) tallied three assists. Hurd had an assist to go with his two goals for Tufts, while Baker finished with one each.
