HOOKSETT, N.H. – Junior Matt Anctil (Wolfeboro, N.H./Exeter Snow Devils) scored two goals to lead Saint Michael’s College to an 8-5 victory over Southern New Hampshire University here tonight in Northeast-10 Conference hockey action. Saint Michael’s improved to 8-10-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league play, while SNHU dropped to 6-10-0 (1-3-0 NE-10)

The Penmen jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following goals by senior Michael Flynn (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Jason Olitch (Calgary, Alberta) at 5:49 and 7:14 of the first period. The Ice Knights cut lead the in half when senior Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Quebec/Stanstead College) scored during a 5-on-3 power play with 4:29 left in the first period. SMC evened the game following a power play goal by Anctil with 1:26 left in the first.

The game remained tied at 2-2 until late in the second period. SMC broke the tie when sophomore Steve Nerland (Calgary, Alberta/Kootenai Colts) stuffed home a rebound at 16:19 of the second period. SNHU answered with a goal by sophomore Howell Smith (Seekonk, Mass.) two minutes later, but the Ice Knights took a 3-2 lead after Anctil netted his second of the game with 30 seconds left in the period.

SMC held a 5-3 lead when the Penmen got goals by sophomore Matt Sheridan (Brandtford, Ontario) and Olitch just 14 seconds apart midway through the final period to tie the game at 5-5. The Ice Knights answered with a goal by sophomore David Mullins (Montreal, Quebec/Governor Dummer Academy) just 15 seconds after Olitch’s game-tying goal and SMC regained a two-goal lead just 1:19 later following a goal by sophomore Jonathan Perez (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Berkshire School).

Junior Nick Towne (Milton, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) helped the SMC cause with a goal and two assists, while Quenneville and Mullins both totaled a goal and an assist.  Olitch led the Penmen with two goals and an assist.

Sophomore Martin Stehl (Eugene, Ore.) went the distance in net for the Penmen and turned away 38 shots. Sophomore Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y./Gunnery School) recorded 33 saves for the Ice Knights, who outshot the Penmen 46-38.

SNHU returns to action Saturday (2/7) when it travels to Worcester State College for an ECAC Northeast game. Saint Michael’s travels to Bowdoin College for an ECAC East game Friday (2/6).
