SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Eighth-ranked New England College scored five times in the third period to pull away for a 7-0 victory versus Saint Michael’s College in ECAC East men’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.

Junior Michael Shimek (Grove City, Pa.) stopped all 25 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. Senior Travis Banga (High River, Alberta) and sophomores Jeff Vandyke (Pekin, Ill.) and Saingbey Woodtor (Evanston, Ill.) tallied a goal and an assist apiece as New England (16-4-2, 10-3-2 ECAC East) netted four power play goals to win its fourth straight contest.

For the Purple Knights, freshman Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y./Gunnery School) stopped 42 shots, 14 in each period. Saint Michael’s (8-13-0, 4-11-0) could not convert on six power play opportunities in losing its third consecutive game.

The Pilgrims opened the scoring 6:15 into the contest, as Banga potted his team-leading 19th goal of the season, and seventh power play marker. New England doubled its lead nine minutes later, as with one second remaining on its second power play chance, freshman Jaakko Kolari (Tampere, Finland) lit the lamp.

Neither team found the back of the net in a second period that featured 10 penalties, including a 10-minute misconduct by Kolari.

The visitors took a 3-0 lead 5:20 into the third stanza, as Vandyke connected on a 5-on-3 advantage. Woodtor gave the Pilgrims a 4-0 lead just 1:35 later, and classmate Jeremy Koning (Chatham, Ontario) potted New England’s fourth power play goal of the night 13:14 into the period for a 5-0 cushion. A pair of goals 29 seconds apart in the waning moments completed the scoring.

New England visits Norwich University tomorrow in a battle of top-10 teams. Saint Michael’s hosts ECAC East and Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm College in a Senior Day matchup on Saturday at 3 p.m. The winner will be crowned the inaugural NE-10 regular-season champion.
