COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Derek Elliot (Pittsburgh, Penn.) scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, as Hamilton College tallied four third-period goals and rolled to a 9-4 win versus Saint Michael’s College in men’s hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.

The Purple Knights opened the scoring 6:48 into a penalty-filled first period, as senior Mike Duffy (Malone, N.Y.) notched a power play goal. Senior Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Alex Watts (Cheshire, Conn.) notched assists on the play, extending their scoring streaks to 12 games, dating back to last season.

The Continentals, however, responded with three power play goals in a 3:47 span midway through the stanza. Senior Scott Gordon (Keene, Ontario) evened the score at the 9:12 mark, then assisted on goals by sophomore Ricky Reichenbach (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Elliot 40 seconds apart to give Hamilton a 3-1 lead after one period.

The visitors increased their lead to 4-1 4:03 into the second period, but Watts cut into the Continentals’ lead with 2:18 left in the frame off of a Quenneville assist. Just 33 seconds later, Gordon recorded his second goal of the game, giving Hamilton a 5-2 lead.

Saint Michael’s again pulled within two 1:37 into the final period, as Duffy notched his second goal of the game. Hamilton, however, put the game out of reach with three unanswered goals midway through the stanza.

Gordon finished with a goal and three assists, while junior Rob MacNeil (St. Peters, Nova Scotia) stopped 18 shots to earn the win in net for Hamilton (3-2-0 overall, 2-2-0 NESCAC).

Junior Andy Joy (Oak Park, Ill.) and freshman Erik Smith (Warwick, R.I.) combined to turn aside 35 shots for Saint Michael’s (3-3, 1-3 ECAC East). The Purple Knights begin a seven-game road trip on Tuesday, as Saint Michael’s plays its final game of the first semester at in-state rival Norwich University at 7 p.m.
