SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT --- Saint Michael’s College used goals from 10 different players and cruised to a season-opening 12-0 victory versus in-state rival Castleton State College in men’s ice hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.
The Purple Knights opened the scoring four minutes into the contest with the first of four power-play goals. Sophomore Alex Watts (Cheshire, Conn.) received a pass from senior Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Quebec) and one-timed the puck past Spartans’ netminder Billy Thompson III (Swanton, Vt.). Watts doubled the lead 3:49 later with another man-advantage tally.
Peter Gross (New Canaan, Conn.) gave Saint Michael’s a 3-0 lead just 24 seconds later, as the sophomore picked off an errant Spartans’ pass in their defensive zone. The Purple Knights added three more goals in the opening 20 minutes, as senior Mike Duffy (Malone, N.Y.), sophomore David Mullins (Montreal, Quebec) and Quenneville lit the lamp.
Saint Michael’s continued its scoring binge in the second stanza, tallying four goals, including a shorthanded marker by junior Chris Zimmermann (Montreal, Quebec). Sophomore Jonathan Perez (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), senior Gavin Faretra (Bow, N.H.), and junior Matt Anctil (Wolfeboro, N.H.) notched the other goals in the period.
Faretra and sophomore Nick Dancey (Anaheim, Calif.) completed the scoring with even-strength goals in the final seven minutes of the third period.
Junior Andy Joy (Oak Park, Ill.) stopped five shots in the first period to record the win for the Purple Knights, while freshmen Erik Smith (Warwick, R.I.) and Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y.) turned aside seven and four shots, respectively, in the win. Three goaltenders combined to stop 36 shots for Castleton State (0-3-0).
Saint Michael’s (1-0-0) returns to action on Friday, as the Purple Knights visit ECAC East rival Connecticut College. The Purple Knights’ next home contest is on Friday, Dec. 5 against Amherst College at 7 p.m.
