AMHERST REMAINS UNDEFEATED, DOWNS PURPLE KNIGHTS

By Matthew Lyons ‘06 Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Amherst College Lord Jeffs scored six unanswered goals and hung on for a 6-3 win versus Saint Michael’s College in men’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena. With the victory, Amherst improves to 5-0-1, while the Purple Knights fall to 3-2-0.
The line of senior Mike Kreger (Glenview, Ill.) and juniors Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, Mass.) and Roy Mabrey (Needham, Mass.) combined for eight points for the Lord Jeffs. Aldrich and Mabrey finished with three points each while Kreger added two assists. Senior Josh Hoffman (Ambler, Penn.) added a pair of goals for Amherst, while freshman Sean Ellis (Springfield, Mass.) completed the Lord Jeffs’ scoring. Freshman Josh Fillman (Charlestown, Mass.) got the win in net for the Lord Jeffs, stopping 33 shots.
For Saint Michael’s, senior Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Alex Watts (Cheshire, Conn.) each tallied two points to extend their scoring streaks to 11 games, dating back to last season. Junior Andy Joy (Oak Park, Ill.) turned aside 29 shots.
Amherst opened the scoring at 5:02 of the first period when Aldrich scored on assists from Mabrey and Kreger. The trio struck again to give Amherst a 3-0 lead with 1:45 remaining in the opening frame, as Mabrey lit the lamp while Kreger and Aldrich notched assists.
Aldrich scored again at 6:10 of the second period to give the Lord Jeffs a 4-0 lead, with Mabrey earning a second assist on the goal. Hoffman buried his second of the game at 17:31 to give Amherst a 5-0 lead after two periods.
Following Ellis’ goal early in the final stanza, Saint Michael’s began to rally, as Watts scored the Purple Knights’ first goal 4:35 into the frame. Watts’ goal came on the power play with assists from freshman Derek Girouard (Methuen, Mass.) and Quenneville. Freshman Andy Rousseau (Lewiston, Maine) recorded his first collegiate goal three minutes later with assists from classmate Jared Silver (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Craig Geragosian (North Andover, Mass.). Freshman defenseman Spencer Williams (East Hampton, Conn.) finished the scoring with eight seconds remaining.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights host Hamilton College at 3 p.m. at Cairns Arena.
