COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Jamie McArdle (Farmington, N.Y.) tallied a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead a balanced offense as Le Moyne College bested Saint Michael’s College, 68-53, in Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball action on Thursday at the Ross Sports Center.

Seniors Chris Henry (Manlius, N.Y.) and Rob Thorpe (Sherrill, N.Y.) chipped in a dozen points apiece for the Dolphins, who shot nine-of-18 from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Purple Knights 43-33. Thorpe added a game-high six assists for Le Moyne (10-7, 8-5 NE-10), which won its third straight contest.

For Saint Michael’s, senior Ben Smith (Southport Island, Maine/Boothbay Region) posted a team-best 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Classmate Delbert Randall (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), playing in his 100th game as a Purple Knight, contributed 11 points, six rebounds and five blocks, while freshman Chris Cayole (Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) notched 14 points and four steals. Saint Michael’s (4-13, 1-12), which suffered its lowest-scoring game of the season, shot just 33 percent from the field, including four-of-19 on three-pointers, in dropping its eighth in a row.

The hosts opened the contest strong, as six-of-10 shooting from the floor gave the Purple Knights its biggest lead, 17-12, eight minutes into the game. Saint Michael’s then went ice cold from the field, missing its next 11 shots and committing seven turnovers in a nine-minute scoreless drought. Le Moyne capitalized, closing the first half with a 19-4 run to take a 31-21 lead at intermission.

The Dolphins picked up where they left off to begin the second period, as the third of Henry’s four three-pointers gave Le Moyne its biggest lead, 43-26, with 13:27 remaining. Saint Michael’s trimmed its deficit to 10 points on two occasions, the last time on a pair of Randall free throws with 2:33 to go that made the score 61-51. McArdle, however, made four free throws in the final 2:16, while the Purple Knights missed five of their final six shots.

Saint Michael’s looks to rebound on Saturday, as the Purple Knights visit conference-leader Bryant College before returning home to face league-rival Assumption College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
