COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Delbert Randall (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) tallied a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds as Saint Michael’s College snapped a nine-game losing streak and rallied past Assumption College, 79-64, in Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday at the Ross Sports Center.

Randall led four Purple Knights in double figures. Sophomore BJ Robertson (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) chipped in 19 points on eight-of-14 shooting, senior Ben Smith (Southport Island, Maine/Boothbay Region) posted 14 points and six rebounds, and junior Eric Swiezynski (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) added 10 points. Freshman Ryan Maloney (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) handed out a career-high seven assists as Saint Michael’s (5-14, 2-13 NE-10) shot 45.5 percent from the field and forced 18 turnovers.

Junior Brian Robinson (Bayonne, N.J.) paced the Greyhounds with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Roy Goffer (Nes-Ziona, Isreal) contributed 15 points, while senior James Lambert (Germantown, Md.) tallied 10 points on just three-of-12 shooting for Assumption (12-8, 7-8).

Saint Michael’s relied on strong defense in the second half to post its first victory of 2004. The Purple Knights held Assumption to just 23 percent shooting (six-of-26) after intermission, including one of eight from beyond the arc. In addition, the Greyhounds hurt themselves by making just seven of their 15 free throws in the second half.

Neither team could seize the momentum in an evenly-played first half that featured five ties and six lead changes. Twelve points by Goffer and 11 by Robinson in the opening stanza helped Assumption take a 44-41 lead into the locker room. Randall and Robertson each scored nine first-half points for Saint Michael’s.

The Purple Knights took control in the second half, opening the period with six straight points. A pair of Smith free throws 1:12 into the period gave the hosts a 45-44 lead, and Assumption never led again. The Greyhounds tied the contest at 47, and pulled within 57-56 with 8:53 remaining, before Saint Michael’s closed the game with a 22-8 run.

Saint Michael’s looks to continue its winning ways on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. conference clash at American International College. The Purple Knights also visit the College of Saint Rose on Feb. 4 before returning home to take on league rival Pace University Feb. 7 at 3:30 p.m.
