Phone: (802) 654-2537LOWELL, Mass. - Senior Martha Marsden (Hull, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as No. 5 University of Massachusetts Lowell edged No. 9 Saint Michael's College, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action Tuesday evening at Cushing Field.
The River Hawks opened the scoring 15:14 into the first period, as senior Laura Petros (Tewksbury, Mass.) tallied her team-leading 11th goal of the season. The Purple Knights tied the contest 7:29 into the second half, as sophomore Ashley Brown (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown Area) scored her first goal off an assist by senior Jilby Danis (Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial).
Just 2:29 later, however, Marsden gave UMass Lowell the lead for good with her second tally of the season.
Junior Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) stopped seven shots for the Purple Knights, while Patrice Mendoza (Wilmington, Mass.) finished with five saves for UMass Lowell (9-3 overall, 9-1 NE-10), who swept its season series with the Purple Knights.
Saint Michael's (7-6, 6-5 NE-10) looks to rebound on Saturday, as the Purple Knights face league-rival Southern Connecticut State University at 12 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
