UMASS LOWELL DEFEATS SMC IN FIELD HOCKEY

September 3, 2003 Contact: Angela AjaCOLCHESTER, VT – Junior Jackie Driscoll (Waltham, Mass.) netted two goals to lead UMass Lowell to a 3-0 victory over Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field.
Both teams remained scoreless entering the second half until junior Laura Petros (Gloucester, Mass.) ripped one past Purple Knights goaltender Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt.) with 23:45 left to play in the game. Driscoll then added some insurance for the River Hawks scoring her first goal of the game at 16:40. A little over two minutes later Driscoll blasted a penalty stroke to the upper left hand corner past Anderson to seal the win for UMass Lowell.
Anderson had ten saves on the day while River Hawks goaltender Patrice Mendoza (Wilmington, Mass.) stopped six shots.
With the loss the Purple Knights fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast 10 while UMass Lowell improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast 10. Saint Michael’s returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant College at 4 p.m.
