COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College senior Michelle Patts (Duxbury, Mass.) netted two goals, including the game-winner 2:30 into the second half, as the Purple Knights knocked off Stonehill College, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.

Patts’ game-winner came off a feed from classmate Jilby Danis (Burlington, Vt.), rewarding the Saint Michael’s defense for a stellar effort. Senior Debbie Gallant (Salem, N.H.) and sophomore April Cioffi (Rutland, Vt.) made clutch goal-line stops, and junior keeper Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) stopped sophomore Julie Michalos’ (Norwood, Mass.) penalty stroke attempt with 15 minutes remaining.

Stonehill broke a scoreless deadlock when Michalos knocked a pass from senior Libby Hanna (Augusta, Maine) past Hunter just 12:25 into the match. However, Patts countered at 14:12 off a feed from junior Linette Letendre (Wellfleet, Mass.) and senior Jenn Gray (Skowhegan, Maine). Sophomore Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn.) tacked on a goal at 15:50 to give Saint Michael’s the lead before junior Erica Marois (Auburn, Mass.) knotted the score at 20:32.

Hunter finished with seven saves on the day while Stonehill’s freshman keeper Carolyn Egan (Mansfield, Mass.) made two. Stonehill held an advantage in shots, 11-5, but each team had five penalty corners.

This game marked the fourth consecutive matchup between the teams that resulted in a one-goal margin, but the first since 2000 that did not produce a 1-0 score. With Gray’s assist today, she has 22 for her career, third alltime at SMC. She needs three more to tie Sarah Alves’ ’01 mark.

Stonehill falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10 with the loss while the Purple Knights are back at .500 at 3-3 and 2-2. They return to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at home versus Assumption College.
