COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Cassie Dewey’s (Lebanon, N.J./Mount Saint Mary’s) first career goal gave Saint Michael’s College, ranked ninth in the latest STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll, an exciting 2-1 overtime victory over No. 6 Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Doc Jacobs Field.

Senior Jenn Gray’s (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) helper on the tally was the 26th of career, setting a new school mark, while senior Debbie Gallant (Salem, N.H./Timberlane) notched her first career assist on the play, which came off a penalty corner. Gray passed former teammate Sarah Alves ’01 on the school’s all-time assist list.

On Southern Connecticut’s first shot of the match, sophomore Emma Rufleth (Clinton, Conn./Morgan) knocked home a feed from classmate Cathy Cardini (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) for a 1-0 lead. The Owls controlled much of the play in the first half but were unable to score again on junior keeper Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield). Saint Michael’s senior back Abbie Bartlett (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) later made a defensive save to keep the game close.

After being outshot 7-4 in the opening frame, the Purple Knights came out firing in the second half, wracking up a 9-1 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in penalty corners. Still down a goal, senior Michelle Patts (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) pulled Saint Michael’s even with 7:27 remaining off of classmate Jessica Simmons’s (Bethlehem, N.H./Profile) pass. Dewey capped the comeback with the overtime winner just 3:18 into the extra period.

The Purple Knights (8-6 overall, 7-5 NE-10) are now 5-1 at home and have won 29 of their last 33 games at Doc Jacobs Field. They have also won seven straight overtime games since 2001 and have five consecutive extra-period victories on the Doc since 1999.

Anderson finished with four saves while Owls senior keeper Sarah Dube (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) made nine stops as Saint Michael’s finished with a 14-8 edge in shots.

Southern Connecticut (9-5 overall, 8-4 NE-10) moves on to face UMass Lowell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while the Purple Knights visit Stonehill College on Monday at 3 p.m.
