COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Jenn Gray (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) and freshman Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J./Mount Saint Mary’s Academy) each notched two goals and an assist as Saint Michael’s College blanked Merrimack College, 6-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field.

With the victory, the Purple Knights clinch home-field advantage in the first round of the NE-10 playoffs, scheduled for Wed., Oct. 29.

Saint Michael’s wasted little time in scoring, as just 2:29 into the contest, senior Jessica Simmons (Bethlehem, N.H./Profile) tallied her seventh goal of the season off of an assist by classmate Debbie Gallant (Salem, N.H./Timberlane).

Gray then took control, as she figured in on the Purple Knights’ next three goals. Gray fed senior Michelle Patts (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) midway through the opening half to double Saint Michael’s lead, then scored twice in the final 8:17 of the stanza, with Dewey assisting on Gray’s first goal.

The Purple Knights continued to dominate play in the second period, as Dewey notched her third and fourth career goals midway through the stanza to complete the scoring. Assists on Dewey’s tallies went to sophomore Johanne Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) and sophomore Ashley Brown (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown Area), respectively.

Saint Michael’s outshot the Warriors 14-3 in the contest, including 10-1 in the first half, and recorded 15 penalty corners to Merrimack’s seven.

Junior Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) stopped two shots for her first shutout of the season, while freshman Sara Joyce (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) turned aside five shots for Merrimack (6-12 overall, 3-12 NE-10).

Saint Michael’s (11-6, 10-5) looks to extend its four-game winning streak on Saturday as it closes out the season by hosting conference-rival American International College at 2 p.m.
