SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Senior Heidi Chirigotis (Westport, Mass.) scored all three Bryant College goals as the Saint Michael's College field hockey team succumbed to the Bulldogs, 3-2, in a battle of last year’s Northeast-10 Conference regular-season champions Saturday at the Bryant Field Hockey Complex.

The Purple Knights gained an early lead on senior Jilby Danis’s (Burlington, Vt.) fourth goal of the season with 12:19 left in the first half. However, Chirigotis knocked home a Melissa Manseau (Bedford, N.H.) blast with 9:43 left in the period to tie the game before she gave the Bulldogs the lead with 6:22 left in the half. Chirigotis finished off her natural hat trick with the game-winner with 4:15 left in the second half to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.

Saint Michael’s got a late goal from senior Michelle Patts (Duxbury, Mass.) with 32 seconds left, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Purple Knights from losing for the first time in six meetings with Bryant.

Junior goalkeeper Kristen Patat (Portsmouth, N.H.) made five saves in the cage for Bryant, which improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10. Saint Michael’s junior goalkeeper Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) had five stops for the Purple Knights, who fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Purple Knights remain on the road for a Tuesday game at American International College at 4 p.m. They return home Saturday for a matchup at noon with Stonehill College, a rivalry which has produced three consecutive 1-0 results.
