Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, VT – Senior Jilby Danis (Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored twice, including the game-winner 1:52 into overtime, as the ninth-ranked Saint Michael’s College field hockey team edged Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption College, 2-1, Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field.
The game-winning goal came on a breakaway. Danis was denied on her first attempt by Greyhounds’ goaltender Colleen Haughey, but the rebound came back to Danis, who scored her seventh goal of the season. The goal moved Danis into eighth place on the Purple Knights’ all-time scoring list with 63 career points.
Saint Michael’s opened the scoring 15 minutes into the contest, as Danis redirected a shot by senior Michelle Patts (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury). Despite holding a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners and an 8-1 shots advantage in the first half, the Purple Knights could not build on their 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until midway through the second half, when Assumption’s Courtney Petrillo beat Saint Michael’s junior netminder Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield). The Purple Knights had two chances to win the game in regulation, but a shot from Patts with 10:45 remaining went over the goal, and Assumption defender Erin Kelly stopped senior Jenn Gray’s (Skowhegan, Me./Skowhegan) shot with just :05 seconds left.
Anderson finished with five saves in picking up her third victory of the season, while Haughey turned aside 16 shots in the loss for Assumption, which falls to 2-5-0 overall, 1-4-0 in NE-10 play.
Saint Michael’s stretched its winning streak to three games in improving to 4-3-0 overall, 3-2-0 in NE-10 action. The Purple Knights visit Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference matchup.
