COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Jack Owens (So. Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Saint Michael’s College opened its home schedule with an 8-8 tie versus in-state rival Norwich University in baseball action on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field. The slated nine-inning contest was called after eight innings due to darkness.

For the Purple Knights, junior Eric Libardoni (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) doubled and singled, knocking in a run, while sophomore Jacob Lowell (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) had an RBI double and a run scored. Freshman Mike Frimodig (Essex Jct., Vt./Essex) allowed just six hits in seven-plus innings of work for Saint Michael’s (4-9-1), which snaps a three-game losing skid.

The Cadets were led by senior Joshua Creighton (Scituate, Mass.), who laced two doubles and scored twice. Classmate Daniel Robinson (Jacksonville, Mass.) added a double and a single, while senior C.J. Daley (Orange, Calif.) singled twice for Norwich (2-6-1).

Saint Michael’s opened the scoring in the second inning, plating three unearned runs. The Purple Knights made it 5-0 in the third, with Lowell’s RBI double and sophomore Kyle Hildebrand’s (So. Windsor, Conn./So. Windsor) run-scoring single the key blows.

Norwich cut its deficit to 5-3 in the fourth, as the first four batters of the inning recorded base hits. The hosts pushed their advantage to 6-3 in the bottom of the frame on Libardoni’s RBI double, and tacked on an unearned run in the fifth to take a four-run lead.

The score remained 7-3 until the eighth, when Norwich sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring five runs. Daley’s two-run single evened the score at 7-all, and Robinson’s infield single gave the Cadets their first lead of the game.

With daylight at a premium, the Purple Knights rallied in the bottom of the eighth. Owens led off with a walk, and advanced to third on sophomore Kevin Koscso’s (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) single to right-center. Owens scored on a passed ball for the final run, and Saint Michael’s would load the bases with one out before Norwich navigated out of trouble and preserved the tie.

Saint Michael’s returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights host Lyndon State College in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Doc Jacobs Field.
