Middlebury, Vt. – The Saint Michael’s College women’s lacrosse team fought through blowing snow and frigid winds to defeat Northeast-10 rival Merrimack College, 15-11, in the team’s first league win of the year at Middlebury College today.

The victory keeps the Purple Knights undefeated at 2-0 while the Warriors remain winless at 0-3.  SMC, ranked fourth in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, avenged last season’s loss to the visitor’s who were ranked second in this year’s poll.

Saint Michael’s went up 3-1 after the first 10 minutes of play and took an 8-3 lead into intermission behind Amanda Lohin’s (Wellesley, Mass.) first-half hat trick and Katie Henry’s (Bayville, N.Y.) two goals. MaryBeth Hull (Pine Beach, N.J.) notched a goal and an assist to lead Merrimack in the first stanza.

The Warriors came out storming in the final 30 minutes as Alisa Arakelian (Wayland, Mass.) exploded for six goals in the final 17 minutes to close the gap, but Lohin and Henry each tallied twice to seal the win for the host team.

Kate Hallisey (W. Roxbury, Mass.) and Alexa Huckins-Noss (Calais, Vt.) each scored twice for SMC, as Lohin finished the day with a team-high six goals. Arakelian had a game-high seven goals and an assist for the game.

Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt.) made 11 saves between the pipes for Saint Michael’s, while Cara Welch (Sandwich, Mass.) stopped 18 shots for Merrimack. SMC out shot its opponents 28-22.
