COLCHESTER, VT – The
Assumption College women’s lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals
in the final 16 minutes of play to defeat Northeast-10 Conference rival
Saint Michael’s, 10-8, at Doc Jacobs Field today.
With the upset victory
over SMC, the Greyhounds improve to 7-5 overall and 6-3 in the NE-10,
while the Purple Knights close out the regular season at 7-8 and 6-3 in
the NE-10.
Assumption struck first
as Julie McDonnell (Brookline, Mass.) put the visitors on the
board at just two minutes into the game. SMC came back to tie then went
up one on the only goal of the day by junior Amanda Lohin (Wellesley,
Mass.) at the 21:18 mark. The game went back and forth for the rest
of the half before the Greyhounds took a 6-5 lead into intermission.
SMC came out storming
in the final stanza, tying the game on a goal by freshman Lauren
Piekarski (E. Sandwich, Mass.) at just 21 seconds in. Classmate Kate
Hallisey (W. Roxbury, Mass.) gave the home team the go ahead goal
exactly one minute later. Assumption followed with another tying goal
before Hallisey scored her fourth goal of the day at the 22:46 mark.
Saint Michael’s could not muster another goal as the Greyhounds took
charge in the closing minutes. Alison Aucoin (Hingham, Mass.) and
Tiffany Gull (Orange, Conn.) both scored their hat trick goals in
the final minutes to seal the win for Assumption.
Freshman Jess
Anderson (Springfield, Mass.) made seven stops for SMC, while senior
Meagan Foran (E. Dennis, Mass.) stopped 11 shots to preserve the
win for Assumption.
Both teams will learn
their postseason fate on Monday as the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs
begin this week.
