The women’s ice hockey team enjoyed its most successful season since the program achieved varsity status in 2000, finishing 4-19-0 overall and 4-16-0 in the ECAC East. Freshman Noreen Russo (Wilmette, Ill.) led the way in scoring for the Purple Knights with 17 goals and 11 assists, the most points ever by a women’s hockey player at SMC.

Russo picked up her first career hat trick against Salve Regina on February 23 at Cairns Arena to edge the Purple Knights past the Seahawks 4-3.  She was also named to the ECAC East Honor Roll, along with sophomore line mate Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass.), the week of January 28 after the two each netted three goals for the weekend against MIT.  Lyons also picked up four assists on the weekend while Russo had three.   Lyons ended the season right behind Russo with 23 points. The Purple Knights picked up all four of their wins against MIT and Salve Regina at Cairns Arena.

The team put forth one of it’s best efforts in a 6-4 loss to Southern Maine.  The Huskies had blanked the Purple Knights the evening before at Cairns Arena 8-0.  Saint Michael’s came out strong in the first period.  Russo gave the Purple Knights the lead at 13:44 but Southern Maine tied it back up before the period was over.  Freshman Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt.) made a valiant effort in goal recording 24 saves.  SMC also got goals from Lyons, freshman Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass.) and sophomore Erin Cleary (Milton, Mass.) but it simply wasn’t enough to hold off the Huskies.

Mason split time between the pipes with sophomore Marcy Ring (N. Attleboro, Mass.).  Mason picked up her fist career shut out on February 24 when the Purple Knights blanked MIT 6-0.  She finished her rookie campaign 2-9-0 with a 5.70 goals against average and a .852 save percentage.  Ring ended the season 2-8-0 while posting a 7.97 GAA and a .824 save percentage.

Saint Michael’s ended the season with a 7-1 loss to Sacred Heart in the ECAC East Open Tournament.  Russo netted the only goal for the Purple Knights while Ring stopped 38 shots.  Saint Michael’s will lose to graduation seniors Meg Dukette (Northfield, Vt.), Sarah Brown (Manchester, N.H.) and Hillary Gagnon (Goffstown, N.H.) but keep their hopes high of climbing the ladder in the tough ECAC East in the 2003-2004 season.
