WALTHAM , Mass. --- The #10 Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team is in danger of losing its national ranking after falling to Bentley College, 9-8, in its Northeast-10 Conference season opener today.

SMC falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the league, while Bentley is now 1-1 against top-10 teams, having lost to #8 C.W. Post in their season opener last Saturday.

The Purple Knights looked like they might bust the game open from the start as they scored two goals in the first six minutes of the game. Senior Kevin Duffy ( Yonkers , N.Y. ) scored the first of his two goals for the visitors at 3:07 and sophomore Ryan Lynn ( New Canaan , Conn. ) tallied the second at 5:57 .

Bentley got on the board at the 10:19 mark of the first frame on freshman Nick Slottje’s ( Ithaca , N.Y.) first goal of the season.

Saint Michael’s opened the scoring in the second at 6:10 on the first of three goals from senior Bryan Barletto ( Liverpool , N.Y. ). Bentley then took control of the game, scoring five unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead into the intermission.

The two teams traded goals in the third, before the Purple Knights outscored Bentley 4-2 in the final stanza, climbing within one, but stingy defense by the Falcons and solid goal-tending from Hartig secured the win.

Saint Michael's hosts NE-10 opponent AIC in its home opener on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
