COLCHESTER, VT – The Saint Michael’s College men’s lacrosse team used tough defense and great passing to hold off Northeast-10 rival Bentley College, 8-5, today and earn home field advantage for the league playoffs that begin on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Purple Knights improve to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the NE-10 and earn the No. 3 seed heading into the conference playoffs. With the loss, the Falcons drop to 7-6 overall and 7-3 in the league and will be the No. 4 seed in the NE-10 tournament.

The Falcons struck first when George Gullage (Billerica, Mass.) scored unassisted at the 7:21 mark of the first quarter. Less than a minute later the home team tied things up as Kevin Duffy (Yonkers, N.Y.) tallied the first of his hat trick. The Purple Knights made it 2-1 at the 5:53 mark in the first session, as senior Greg Gosier (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) fired in a shot off a pass by classmate Jonathan Curley (W. Hartford, Conn.). The visitors tied it up on Gullage’s second goal, but SMC scored the go ahead with one second remaining as junior Nate Siegler (Brownsville, Vt.) sent a shot home for the 3-2 advantage.

The Purple Knights netted three more in the second quarter, with Duffy tallying his second and third of the game, and Siegler adding another score to his point total. Bentley came back at the 1:24 mark as Nick Slottje (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored with a man down to cut the home team’s lead to two.

Defense took control of the third quarter, as neither team was able to score. Things were heated in the final 15 minutes of play, but it was the home team who endured the pressure, as Siegler and Curley sealed the win with a goal apiece. A late comeback by the Falcons proved futile as the Purple Knights hit the double-digit win mark for the first time in school history.

Senior Jim Crozier (Avon, Conn.) made 11 saves for SMC, while Andrew Hartig (Wyckoff, N.J.) stopped 13 shots for Bentley as the home team out shot the visitors, 47-20.

Saint Michael’s hosts No. 6 Saint Anselm on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Doc Jacobs field for an NE-10 Quarterfinal round game, while No. 4 Bentley will host No. 5 Pace that day.
