The Saint Michael’s men’s ice hockey team wrapped up its 2002-2003 campaign with its second consecutive ECAC Division II championship, defeating Saint Anselm College in overtime, 2-1, on March 8 at Cairns Arena.  Freshman Alex Watts (Chesire, Conn.) scored the game-winner just 1:23 into the overtime session, earning him Tournament MVP honors.  Watts finished his first season third in scoring for the Ice Knights, tallying 25 points on nine goals and 16 assists.  Watts was also named to the Division II All-Division II rookie team.  Freshman Jonathan Perez (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) scored the first goal of the game for Saint Michael’s with 4:07 remaining in the second period, knotting the game at 1-1.  Perez, who finished fourth in points with 20, scoring 11 goals and nine assists, was also named to the All-Division II Rookie team.

Sophomore goalie Andy Joy (Oak Park, Ill.) gave one of his top performances of the year in the championship, making 28 saves while stopping good scoring chances from Saint Anselm late in the third period.  Joy earned All-Tournament team honors, allowing just two goals in the two tournament games, and was also named the ECAC Division II Goaltender of the Year and to the All-Academic team.

Senior Daykin Marini (Bloomfield, Colo.) and junior Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Que.) both picked up assists in the game and earned All-Tournament honors.  Quenneville, who tallied a goal and assist in the first round win over Assumption, finished the season as the Ice Knights’ leading scorer, scoring 21 goals and 26 assists.  Quenneville was also named to the All-Division II first team.  Marini, who was a key aspect of the Saint Michael’s defense this year, finished the season with 17 points, picking up three goals and 14 assists. Marini also finished his career with the Ice Knights with 38 points, scoring eight goals and tallying 30 assists, and was named to the All-Division II first team.

Saint Michael’s finished the season with an 11-13-2 record overall and a 5-12-2 record in the ECAC Division III East.  During the year, the Ice Knights earned a win and a tie in two of the biggest games in Saint Michael’s history.  On Feb. 8, Perez’s game-winner helped the Ice Knights knock off nationally ranked Bowdoin College, 2-0.  On Feb. 22, Saint Michael’s stunned the No. 2 ranked perennial powerhouse Middlebury College with a 4-4 tie at Cairns Arena.

A number of players recorded impressive numbers this season for the Ice Knights.  Junior Ian Morse (Waterbury, Vt.) finished second in scoring, picking up 26 points with 14 goals and 12 assists.  Junior Gavin Faretra (Bow, N.H.) scored 12 goals and seven assists for Saint Michael’s, earning All-Division II second team honors.  Junior defender Brent Hill (St. Albert, Alberta), who finished the season with 12 assists, was also named to the All-Division II second team and earned All-Academic honors. Senior co-captain Tom Mariano (Northfield, Vt.) was also named to the All-Academic team. Saint Michael’s head coach Lou DiMasi, who wrapped up his 20th season at the helm, was named the ECAC Division II Coach of the Year.
