Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Second-ranked Manhattanville College broke open a close game with five second-period goals to down Saint Michael’s College, 10-0, in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.
For the Valiants, freshman Jessica Zimmerman (Wauseon, Ohio) and senior Cherie Stewart (Lake Forest, Calif.) each scored twice and added an assist. Juniors Jami Grasby (Stratford, Ontario) and Lisa-Marie Simard (Aylmer, Quebec) each notched a goal and three assists, while senior Nicole Elliott (Scarborough, Ontario) stopped six shots to earn the shutout for Manhattanville (10-0-1, 9-0-0 ECAC East).
For Saint Michael’s (2-7-0, 1-6-0 ECAC East), junior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) turned back 60 shots, including 25 in the second period. Despite the loss, the Purple Knights held the Valiants scoreless on all five of their power play opportunities.
Manhattanville opened the scoring 10:35 into the contest, as Grasby stuffed a loose puck past a diving Mason, with juniors Ashley Trimble (Carleton Place, Ontario) and Jessica Temesy (Blenheim, Ontario) earning assists. Saint Michael’s maintained its one-goal deficit for the rest of the period, as Mason stopped 23 shots in the frame and helped the Purple Knights kill off a 5-on-3 Valiants’ power play spanning 1:25.
The visitors created some breathing room in the second stanza, scoring twice in the first 4:17 of the period. Trimble made the score 2-0 at the 2:23 mark, tallying a 4-on-4 goal off of assists from Grasby and Temesy, with Temesy earning her 100th career point. Less than two minutes later, freshman Dani Poupart (Fernie, British Columbia) lit the lamp for her second goal of the season, with Simard and senior Nicole Blais (Rochester, N.Y.) recording assists.
Freshman Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario) gave Manhattanville a 4-0 lead 6:56 into the second period, with Blais and sophomore Anna Schimelpfenig (Bernardston, Mass.) credited with assists. Simard increased the lead to 5-0 with 5:23 left in the frame, as she roofed a shot off of assists from Zimmerman and Grasby, and Zimmerman gave the visitors a 6-0 cushion with 2:56 left in the frame off of a Grasby helper.
In the third period, the Valiants received a pair of goals from Stewart and single goals from Zimmerman and freshman Amanda Nonis (Brampton, Ontario). Saint Michael’s best scoring chance of the game came five minutes into the final period, when point-blank shots from sophomore Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) and junior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) were turned wide by Elliott.
