SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Saint Anselm College scored twice late in the second period to take the lead for good and edged Saint Michael’s College, 4-3, in women’s ice hockey action on Saturday at Cairns Arena.

Junior Danielle Campbell (Milton, Mass.) led the Hawks with a pair of goals, while freshmen Lindsay Snow (Amherst, N.H.) and Brittany Kretzman (Edina, Minn.) also scored. Freshmen Olivia Nuzzo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Andrea Berlin (Durham, N.H.) combined for 15 saves as Saint Anselm (6-1-0) completed the weekend sweep.

For the Purple Knights, sophomore Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) lit the lamp twice, while freshman Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./Middlebury Union) tallied a goal and an assist. Senior Marcy Ring (North Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) and junior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) combined to stop 32 shots for Saint Michael’s (2-6-0).

Saint Anselm opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period, as Campbell tallied her seventh goal of the season 14:09 into the contest off of assists from sophomore Bevin Padgett (Needham, Mass.) and freshman Arden Lyons (Westford, Mass.).

Gagne gave the hosts a 2-1 lead early in the second stanza. She evened the score 53 seconds into the frame, with Bourgeois earning the assist, and four minutes later, Gagne notched her fifth goal of the season off of an assist from senior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional).

The Hawks tied the score at 2-all 8:13 into the period on Snow’s third goal of the year, but Bourgeois’ unassisted tally with 2:21 left in the frame restored the Purple Knights’ one-goal lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as just 24 seconds later, Campbell knotted the score at 3-all with a power play marker. Exactly one minute later, Kretzman gave the visitors the lead for good, tallying her first goal of the season off of assists from freshman Tiea Kurlowecz (Concord, Mass.) and junior Emily Lapworth (Milton, Mass.).

Both teams switched goalies to start the final period, with Mason stopping all eight shots she faced in the frame, and Berlin thwarting all six chances by the Purple Knights. Saint Michael’s failed to capitalize on two power play chances in the middle of the period.

Saint Michael’s returns to action on Friday, as the Purple Knights begin a two-game series versus nationally-ranked ECAC East rival Manhattanville College at 7 p.m.
