Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Saint Anselm College received goals from five different freshmen in posting a 6-0 win versus Saint Michael’s College in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.
For the Hawks, freshman Moraghan McKenna (Wayzata, Minn.) scored twice and added an assist, while fellow first-year Tiea Kurlowecz (Concord, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist. Classmates Arden Lyons (Westford, Mass.), Kelsey Hunt (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Cindy Lebel (Greenville, Maine) also scored, while fellow freshman Andrea Berlin (Durham, N.H.) notched her third career shutout by stopping 21 shots for Saint Anselm (5-1-0, 2-1-0 ECAC East).
For Saint Michael’s (2-5-0, 1-5-0 ECAC East), junior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) turned aside 40 shots.
After controlling the tempo for the first 15 minutes, Saint Anselm opened the scoring with two even-strength goals late in the first period. McKenna tallied the first goal at the 15:12 mark, as she stuffed home a rebound off of a shot from sophomore Bevin Padgett (Needham, Mass.). Less than two minutes later, Lyons lit the lamp, as she fired a shot off of the post and past Mason.
The score remained 2-0 for much of the second stanza, until Hunt increased the Hawks’ lead with 4:50 left in the period on a backhander from McKenna. Three minutes later, the visitors capitalized on a Purple Knights’ tripping penalty, as McKenna notched a power play goal off of the skate of a Saint Michael’s defender for a 4-0 advantage.
Saint Anselm sealed the victory with a pair of goals early in the third period. Kurlowecz struck for a power play marker 2:28 into the frame, and seven minutes later, Lebel lit the lamp with an unassisted tally.
Saint Michael’s and Saint Anselm complete their weekend series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
