     SMC MEN, SAINT ANSELM GO 2-0 AT CLARION DOC JACOBS CLASSIC

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College and Saint Anselm College each won for the second straight day on Saturday to conclude play at the Clarion Doc Jacobs Classic at the Ross Sports Center. The host Purple Knights bested New Jersey Institute of Technology in the nightcap, 82-72, while Saint Anselm won the opener, 107-87.

In the final game of the classic, tournament Most Valuable Player Mike Keating (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) notched a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds as the Purple Knights held off NJIT for their third win in as many games this season. Fellow junior BJ Robertson (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) added 17 points and eight boards, freshman James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) recorded 14 points, and senior Eric Swiezynski (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) and freshman Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) each scored 10.

For NJIT (0-2), freshman Kraig Peters (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) tallied 17 points, classmate Brett Johnson (Marlton, N.J.) chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds, sophomore Clayton Barker (Passaic, N.J.) notched 13 points, and sophomore Marc Milbourne Swan (Pleasantville, N.J.) posted 10 points and seven boards.

The hosts opened a 42-33 halftime lead, and slowly pulled away in the second half. Saint Michael’s took its biggest lead, 79-59, with less than three minutes to go, before NJIT closed with a 13-3 run to complete the scoring. The Purple Knights shot 18-of-21 from the foul line and held a 41-33 advantage in rebounds.

In the first contest, all five Saint Anselm starters scored in double figures – including four by halftime – as the Hawks pulled away for victory. Junior Jim Moore (Worcester, Mass.) led the way with 26 points, six rebounds and eight assists, while classmate Matt Cahill (Bridgewater, Mass.) had 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Junior Jim Holsworth (Bogota, N.J.) added 21 points and six assists, senior Chris Conroy (Kingston, Mass.) notched 18 points, and junior Darlington Okerulu (Jersey City, N.J.) chipped in 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field for Saint Anselm (2-0).

For the Beacons, sophomore Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass.) scored a game-high 32 points, while senior Roger Perry (Roxbury, Mass.) tallied 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Freshman Alberto Paniagua (Lawrence, Mass.) added 12 points for UMass Boston (0-2).

Saint Michael’s returns to action on Friday, as the Purple Knights play Saint Cloud State University at 4 p.m. EST in the opening game of the American Family Insurance Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota Duluth. Saint Michael’s returns home to host Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College on Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
