In the opener, Saint Anselm edged the University of the Sciences, 65-64, and in game two, Saint Michael’s bested Queens College of New York, 67-53.
In the nightcap, junior Dani Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) tallied a game-high 19 points and added six rebounds as the Purple Knights won their season-opener and stretched their winning streak in their annual tournament to nine games. Senior Holly Reeves (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) added 14 points, connecting on 4-of-6 3-point attempts, while classmate Brigid Hegarty (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) chipped in with 10 points and a game-best six assists and five steals. Junior Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for Saint Michael’s.
For Queens (0-1), senior Patti Cronin (East Islip, N.Y.) was the lone player to score in double figures with 15 points. Junior Jillian Henn (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) added nine points and five rebounds for the Knights.
Saint Michael’s used 48 percent shooting in the first half to take a 39-32 lead at intermission. Dani Rayner and Reeves combined for 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor in the opening period, and forced 13 Queens turnovers in the frame.
The Purple Knights maintained their lead throughout the second half, as Hegarty scored a team-high seven points in the second stanza to withstand Queens’ comeback. The Knights were undone by their 24 percent shooting in the second period in suffering the 14-point loss.
In Saturday’s first contest, Raenielle DeCastro-Cain (Manchester, Conn.) shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the field for a game-high 23 points off the bench as Saint Anselm rallied past University of the Sciences. Freshman Justine Lyons (Reading, Mass.) recorded 15 points for the Hawks, while senior Lanna Martin (Calais, Maine) added 11 points and seven rebounds for Saint Anselm (1-1).
For the Sciences, junior Shelby Rance (Bloomsburg, Pa.) led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points, while senior Leah Shumoski (Broomall, Pa.) added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Rashanna Edwards (Plainsboro, N.J.) tallied 13 points and a game-high four steals, and freshman Allison Weiss (Springfield, Pa.) recorded 10 points and nine boards for USIP (0-1).
The Devils led for much of the first half, but a late Saint Anselm run evened the score at 31-all at intermission. The Sciences stretched its lead to a game-high 10 points, 51-41, with less than nine minutes remaining, but Saint Anselm then went on a 15-2 run over the next 3:30 to take the lead, 56-53. The Devils tied the score for the last time at 60 with 2:06 to go, but a pair of free throws by junior Jessica Morgan (West Labanon, N.H.) gave the Hawks the lead for good, and Saint Anselm hung on for the win.
The DoubleTree Tip-Off Classic concludes on Sunday, as Saint Anselm and Queens face off at 1 p.m., followed by Saint Michael’s and USIP at 3 p.m.
