GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior goalie Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y.) stopped 35 shots and freshman forward Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal to lead the St. Michael's College Purple Knights to a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC East game Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the 250th for Purple Knights head coach Lou DiMasi, the only coach in the history of the program.  DiMasi, in his 24th season, now has a 250-275-17 career record.

Jackson stonewalled the Huskies through 55 minutes before surrendering a goal.  He was particularly strong in the second and third periods as the Huskies out-shot the Purple Knights, 27-14, and had a number of good scoring opportunities.

Mero, who set up the only goal of the first period, scored the eventual game-winner at 3:53 of the middle period off a nice passing play by sophomore Tim Dancey (Anaheim, Calif.), who had a power-play goal in the first period, and junior Jared Silver (Montreal, Quebec).  Junior Chris Thurston (Wallingford, Conn.) would score the first of his two goals at 12:58 to make it 3-0 after two periods.

Silver made it 4-0 with a short-handed goal at 6:22 of the third period.

Southern Maine finally got the puck past Jackson with 4:56 remaining as junior Mark Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) lit the lamp.  Thurston's second goal, off an assist from Mero, at 16:40 accounted for the final score.

Junior David Beckles (Stamford, Conn.) finished the game with 23 saves for the Huskies.  USM had a 36-28 advantage in shots on goal, but was hampered by going 0 for 9 on the power play.

The Huskies will host defending regular season champion Norwich University Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m.).  St. Michael's travels to Salem State College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).  Norwich and Salem State played to a 1-1 overtime tie Friday night at Salem, Mass.
