SMC, SAINT ANSELM POST WINS AT CLARION DOC JACOBS CLASSIC

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College and Saint Anselm College posted victories on Friday in opening-day action at the Clarion Doc Jacobs Classic at the Ross Sports Center. The host Purple Knights edged the University of Massachusetts Boston, 97-92, while the Hawks bested New Jersey Institute of Technology in the opener, 83-61.
In the nightcap, junior BJ Robertson (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) notched a game-high 25 points to lead Saint Michael’s (2-0). Classmate Mike Keating (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) added 22 points, senior Eric Swiezynski (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) tallied 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and junior Chase Graves (West Chester, Pa./Storm King) contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
For the Beacons, sophomore Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass.) recorded 23 points and a game-high six steals, while senior Roger Perry (Roxbury, Mass.) posted 22 points and a team-best four assists. Senior Eric T. Bateman (Glassboro, N.J.) and freshman Alberto Paniagua (Lawrence, Mass.) scored 19 and 14 points, respectively, as UMass Boston dropped its opener.
After racing out to a 50-40 halftime lead, Saint Michael’s appeared to put the game away by opening up a 20-point lead, 82-62, with just under seven minutes remaining. UMass Boston, however, went on a 30-13 run over the next 6:30 to trim its deficit to 95-92 with 18 seconds left in regulation. A pair of free throws by freshman James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) with eight seconds to go sealed the victory for the Purple Knights.
In the first contest, Saint Anselm, ranked 10th in Street & Smith’s Division II preseason poll, cruised to a season-opening victory by posting a 49-20 halftime lead. Junior Matt Cahill (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a team-high 20 points for the Hawks, senior Chris Conroy (Kingston, Mass.) added 15 points, junior Jim Moore (Worcester, Mass.) tallied 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds and four steals, and classmate Jim Holsworth (Bogota, N.J.) notched 13 points and six assists.
For NJIT (0-1), sophomore Marc Milbourne Swan (Pleasantville, N.J.) was the lone player in double figures with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field. Classmate Clayton Barker (Passaic, N.J.) handed out a team-high six assists.
The Clarion Doc Jacobs Classic concludes on Saturday, as Saint Anselm and UMass Boston tip things off at 12 p.m., followed by Saint Michael’s and NJIT at 2 p.m. After the men’s contests, the Saint Michael’s women host the Clarion Tip Off Classic, with Franklin Pierce College and Dowling College facing off at 4 p.m., and the Purple Knights squaring off against Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 6 p.m.
