Phone: (802) 654-2929COLCHESTER, Vt. – The women’s ice hockey team (3-1-0, 2-1-0 ECAC East) picked up two wins over Castleton State this past weekend, helping Saint Michael's to its best start in program history. On Friday night, sophomore Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./Middlebury Union) scored the game winning goal and added two assists, while captain Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) contributed two goals of her own in the team’s 5-3 victory in Rutland, Vt. Sophomore Tracy MacGregor (Danvers, Mass./Proctor Academy) picked up her first points of the season, scoring a goal and assisting on another, as Kristen Salierno (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars) made 37 saves, improving the freshman goaltender’s record to 2-0. The Purple Knights played the Spartans again on Saturday, this time at Cairns Arena, winning by a final score of 5-2. Freshman Kelly Adams (Chevy Chase, Md./Washington Little Caps) and senior Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) each had two assists, and with her next assist, the assistant captain will tie Meg Lyons ’05 on top of the school’s all time assist list. Meanwhile, fellow assistant captain Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) turned away 32 shots for her first win of the season. Gagne added two more goals, including the game winner, and also added an assist to raise the junior’s point total to five for the weekend. Sophomore Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt./Springfield) had a goal and a pair of assists, and with seven points, she is tied with Gagne for the team’s scoring lead. Freshman Anne Altieri (Stamford, Conn./Millbrook School) scored her first collegiate goal in the contest for the Purple Knights, who do not play again at home until the Saint Michael’s Tournament which is scheduled for December 30-31.

On Sunday, Tim Dancey had two goals and an assist, while Silver scored the game winner and added an assist. Senior co-captain Alex Watts (Cheshire, Connecticut/Berkshire School) contributed three assists.
The men’s hockey team (0-1-0, 0-1-0 NE-10) opened its season with a 5-4 loss to Stonehill College Saturday afternoon, and defeated Carleton University 10-3 in an exhibition contest on Sunday. The men’s swim team (1-1) earned its first win of the season on Saturday, picking up a 126-92 win over Colby-Sawyer. Junior Michael DeGrandpre (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) earned wins in both one meter diving events, just edging out Colby-Sawyer’s second place finisher by three points with a score of 136.45 in the first contest, and won the second with a total of 195.15 points. Senior Thomas Wu (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfield) took the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:28.91, and sophomore Michael Kaas (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) placed first in the 100 yard individual medley in 1:00.95. Both swimmers also helped the team take the 200 yard freestyle relay in the final event of the meet, along with freshman Andrew Link (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame), and junior Allan Smith (Southbury, Conn./ Pomperaug) who anchored the race for the Purple Knights, who won the race by less than two seconds.
The women’s swim team (0-2) also competed against Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, losing to the Chargers 127-114. Junior Laura Mann (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) picked up wins in the 100 yard individual medley with a time of 1:07.10, and the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:46.55. Freshman Stephanie Hammer (Billings, Mont./Billings West) remains undefeated in her career, winning the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:42.57, over a minute ahead of the second place finisher, and later won the 500 yard freestyle in 5:43.25.
The men’s basketball team completed its exhibition schedule on Sunday night, losing to division one opponent Boston College, who is ranked 11th nationally, by a final score of 102-62. Sophomore James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) led Saint Michael's with 14 points and classmate Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) had a team high seven rebounds for the Purple Knights, who open the regular season on Friday in Pennsylvania when they participate in the West Chester Tournament.
The women’s basketball team also finished its preseason schedule with a 69-24 win over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday. Junior Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) had a game high 14 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Allison Dunn (Wippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) helped out with six assists. The team opens up the season this Saturday when Saint Michael's College will host the Doubletree Tip-Off Classic which will be held at the Ross Sports Center.
Members of the Saint Michael's field hockey team, senior Meg McCarthy (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) and junior Ashley Webb (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) were named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II All-American Second Team on Monday. McCarthy, a co-captain in 2005, and Webb anchored a Purple Knights' defense that allowed two goals or less in more than half of the team's contests. McCarthy started all 19 contests and finished with one assist and one defensive save, while Webb started all 18 games she played and tallied three goals (including two game-winners) and four assists for 10 points.
