SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. –   Sophomore Jared Silver (Montreal, Quebec) scored two goals and two assists, while junior Alex Watts (Cheshire, Conn.) added a pair of goals and an assist as Saint Michael’s College opened the 2004-05 season with a 7-4 exhibition win against Carleton University of Canada at Cairns Arena on Saturday afternoon.

For the Purple Knights, freshman Erik Caron (Kanata, Ontario) notched a goal and two assists, while sophomore Derek Girouard (Methuen, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist. The trio of senior Andy Joy (Oak Park, Ill.) and sophomores Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y.) and Erik Smith (Warwick, R.I.) combined for 18 saves as Saint Michael’s scored five power play goals and one shorthanded marker in the victory.

For the Ravens, senior Garrett Thiessen (Winkler, Manitoba) recorded a goal and two assists, while classmate Andrew Stewart (Clearwaterslake, Manitoba) scored twice. Freshman Cody Spicer (Ottawa, Ontario) stopped 28 shots.

Carleton opened the scoring 3:47 into the first period with Thiessen’s tally. The Purple Knights answered just 1:15 later, as Caron potted an even-strength goal off of assists from Watts and sophomore Chris Thurston (Wallingford, Conn.). Watts added a goal of his own just two minutes later when he took a feed from junior Jonathan Perez (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and shelved a power play marker. Jackson stopped four of the five shots he faced for the Purple Knights in the period.

The Purple Knights took advantage of their power play opportunities in the second period, netting three goals with the man advantage. The Purple Knights added to their lead when Silver made a nifty pass through traffic to find Watts open on the far post for his second goal of the game 7:49 into the stanza. After a Raven goal cut the lead to 3-2, Silver forced Spicer to commit low and went upstairs to give the Purple Knights a two goal lead midway through the period. A costly penalty allowed the Ravens to pick up another power play goal on a Brad Wood (Kilworthy, Ontario) marker. With just over three minutes to go in the period, Girouard put home the third power play goal of the period on assists from Silver and Caron, giving the hosts a 5-3 cushion. Joy turned aside seven shots for the Purple Knights in the period.

After giving up an early power play goal in the third period to reduce the lead to 5-4, senior captain Matt Anctil (Wolfeboro N.H.) roofed the puck over the left shoulder of Spicer shorthanded to give the Purple Knights their third two-goal lead of the game. Silver’s slap shot from the point put the icing on the cake for the Purple Knights midway through the third.

The Purple Knights host Connecticut College in their season opener on Friday at 7 p.m., before taking on Tufts University on November 20 at 3 p.m.
