COLCHESTER, Vt. – The volleyball team (4-16, 2-12 NE-10) completed its fall schedule on Saturday, as they went 1-2 over the past week. The team suffered a 3-0 loss to Middlebury on Tuesday before playing a double header on Saturday against Pace University and Southern Connecticut State University. The Purple Knights were defeated 3-2 by the Setters in the first game in a very competitive match. Senior Katilyn Rae (Willbraham, Mass./Reading Memorial) had a game high 25 kills and four service aces, as classmate Jessica Mulroy (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) added 51 assists and six assisted blocks. Freshman Stephanie Smetana (Independence, Mo./Truman) had 16 digs and senior Katie Ouellette (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) had 15 kills and 13 digs. The team then matched up against the Owls in the final collegiate game for the Purple Knights’ three seniors. In their careers, Mulroy amassed 1,423 assists and 439 digs in 282 games, Ouellette played in 323 games and had 658 kills, 431 digs and 294 blocks, and Rae played 332 games and totaled 666 digs, 171 service aces, and 810 kills, which is good for second on the program’s all time list. In the team’s 3-0 win, Rae led the way with a team-high 20 kills and 12 digs as Ouellette added nine kills for Saint Michael’s, while Mulroy handed out a match-high 44 assists as the trio was honored prior to the contest. 

Rounding out the Saint Michael's fall athletic schedule was the men’s and women’s cross country teams, as they traveled to Boston, Mass. to participate in the NCAA Regionals. Out of 20 teams, the men placed in seventh, with junior Thomas Lichtenberger (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) finishing first among Purple Knights runners with a time of 32:39, which was good for 16
th place in a field of over 120 runners. Senior Paul Wagner (Woods Hole, Mass./Suffield Academy) placed 36th, with his time of 34:04, and senior Lionel Welch (Worthington, Mass./Wahconah Regional) was close behind in 40th in 34:17. Freshman Brendan Johnson (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) and sophomore James Heelan (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) rounded out SMC’s top runners with respective times of 35:07 and 35:26.

On the women’s side, senior Kim Fahner (Westminster, Vt./Vermont Academy) helped guide the Purple Knights to an 11th place finish out of 15 teams, placing 32nd, running the race in 25:03. Sophomore Courtney Richard’s (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) time of 25:39 was good for 54th, just ahead of freshman Mary Lynn Denholm’s (Sparks, Md./St. Paul School) 57th place finish in 25:45. Senior Jessie Sedore (Craftsbury, Vt./Craftsbury) finished in 26:33 and 72nd place, three seconds ahead of freshman Meagan Barber (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), who placed 76th.

The women’s hockey team (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) opened up its 2005-06 season with a 6-4 win over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday night, marking the first time in the team’s six year history that the Purple Knights have opened their season with a victory. Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt./Springfield) scored two goals, including the game winner, and also added an assist in the freshman forward’s first collegiate game. Sophomore Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./Middlebury Union) picked up where she left off last season, as the team’s leading returning scorer from a year ago received a leading pass from freshman Molly Dever (Fairport, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and skated into a one on two situation but still managed to find the net. Bourgeois later added another goal, again receiving assistance from Dever. Senior assistant captain Michelle Miaskiewicz (Salem, Mass./North Shore Vipers) contributed both a goal and an assist, while junior captain Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) had two assists. On Sunday, Saint Michael's played a very strong division one opponent in the College of the Holy Cross, and was defeated by a final score of 6-0. For the Purple Knights, senior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) had 17 saves, while freshmen Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and Kristen Salierno (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars) had 13 and five saves as each goaltender played one period.

The men’s swim team (0-1) lost to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, 155-141 at the Ross Sports Center. Senior co-captain Chris Cochran (Forestdale, Mass./Barnstable) led the way for the Purple Knights, placing first in both the 1000 and 500 yard freestyle races, with times of 11:14.72 and 5:29.29. Fellow co-captain Thomas Wu (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfield) also had two first place finishes, in the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke events, with respective times of 29.06 and 1:05.37
The women’s swim team (0-1) also suffered a similar fate to UMass Dartmouth, falling to the Corsairs 164-129. Freshman Stephanie Hammer (Billings, Mont./Billings West) had two first place finishes, finishing the 1000 freestyle in 11:44.12, and the 500 free in 5:45.96. Laura Mann (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) placed first in the 50 yard breaststroke for the Purple Knights, with a time of 34.5, and also in the 200 individual medley in 2:27.93.

The women’s basketball team opened its two-game exhibition schedule with a 54-43 victory versus Carleton University on Saturday. Junior Dani Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) tallied a game-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, while twin sister Jevy Rayner (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Falls Union) chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Amy Pitchers (Oxford Mills, Ontario/North Grenville) added 10 points for Saint Michael’s.

The men’s basketball team was defeated 82-59 by the University of Vermont on Saturday. Junior Chris Cayole (Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) led the team with 17 points, and sophomore Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) had 13 points and four rebounds for the Purple Knights.

On Thursday, six Saint Michael's College student-athletes were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Men's and Women's Soccer All-Academic Teams. On the women's side, senior Kaylin Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) earned First Team honors for the second straight season. Landing on the Second Team were senior Judy Cronin (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional), junior Charlotte Dzerkacz (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) and sophomore Laura Wesley (Chula Vista, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace). On the men's side, junior Mitsuhiro Hamakawa (Chiba, Japan/Gakushuin University) and sophomore Brandon Beaudoin (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) garnered First Team honors.

On Friday, five cross country runners were also named to the Northeast-10 All-Academic Team. For the men, senior Christopher Lynch (Cambridge, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) was named to the First Team, while classmates Liz Gray (Westmoreland, N.H./Keene) and Robyn Bratica (Milford, Mass./Milford) received second team honors for the women. Also being named to the second team were sophomores Mary Gibbons (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and Bridget Craig (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral).
