Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior Meghan Mahoney (Utica, N.Y.) tallied two goals and two assists as College of the Holy Cross blanked Saint Michael’s College, 9-0, in season-opening ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.
For the Crusaders, junior Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) also scored twice, while junior Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) and freshman Samantha Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) added a goal and an assist each. Sophomore Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned back 18 shots for the shutout.
For Saint Michael’s, senior Marcy Ring (No. Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) and junior Annice Mason (Berlin, Vt./U-32) combined for 25 saves.
Holy Cross took advantage of two early checking penalties by the Purple Knights to open a quick lead. Bloxson opened the scoring on the power play just 1:02 into the contest, and less than two minutes later, Rush tallied her first collegiate goal, also with the man advantage. The Crusaders pushed their lead to 3-0 with three minutes left in the opening period on sophomore Christine O’Hara’s (Burnsville, Minn.) even-strength goal.
The visitors doubled their lead with three more goals in the second stanza, as Wetherbee, Bloxson and Mahoney lit the lamp. Holy Cross sealed the win with a trio of goals three minutes apart in the final period, including the first career goals for freshmen Shauna Pires (Falmouth, Mass.) and Parnell Ormiston (Duxbury, Mass.).
Saint Michael’s and Holy Cross complete their weekend series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
