Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Casey Grange’s (Methuen, Mass.) first-half goal was the difference as Bryant University blanked Saint Michael’s College, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field. The loss knocks the Purple Knights out of playoff contention, as Saint Michael’s (8-8-2, 5-8-1 NE-10) needed a win in its regular-season finale, plus outside help, to earn the eighth and final postseason berth.
For the Bulldogs, freshman Lauren Childers (Franklin, Mass.) assisted on Grange’s game-winner, while senior Kim Rekart (Ellicott City, Md.) turned back three shots for Bryant (13-4-2, 9-3-2 NE-10). The Bulldogs can still finish anywhere from second to sixth in the league standings.
Freshman Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) stopped eight shots for Saint Michael’s, which honored three seniors playing in their final college game: Devin Camerlengo (South Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial), Jess Mulson (Rensselaer, N.Y./Holy Names), and Karyn Sporer (Southborough, Mass./Marian).
The visitors got all the scoring they would need 19:43 into the contest, as Childers slipped a pass to Grange, who held off a defender and right-footed a low shot off of the inside right post.
The Purple Knights had a prime opportunity to even the score midway through the second stanza, but sophomore Jenn Kerns’ (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) blast from 10 yards out sailed just over the crossbar. Another chance by Sporer in the waning minutes hit the top of the net.
Despite the loss, Saint Michael’s recorded its fifth straight .500-or-better season under sixth-year head coach Marcel Choquette, who finishes the season tied with Azzie Azagoh Kouadio for the most wins in program history with 52.
