FIELD HOCKEY FALLS IN NE-10 QUARTERFINALS, 4-2
SMC completes season with 10-9 record; Southern Connecticut advances to semifinals

OCTOBER 26, 2005 –NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Cathy Cardini (Willington, Conn.) and sophomore Angela Cafarelli (Enfield, Conn.)  each scored a pair of goals and added an assist as 9th-ranked Southern Connecticut tipped 10th-ranked St. Michael’s, 4-2, in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference field hockey championship Wednesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

The Owls, now 13-7, move on to the NE-10 semifinals to take on top-seed and second-ranked UMass Lowell Saturday at noon at Lowell, Mass.  The championship game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m., also at Lowell.  Second-seeded Stonehill takes on the winner of a first round game between Bentley and Merrimack in a semifinal Saturday at 3 p.m.

Cafarelli opened the scoring 1:33 into the game, tipping a pass from Cardini past St. Michael’s goalkeeper Tina Nardi (Rupert, Vt.). Cardini scored an unassisted goal at 30:32, poking home a rebound after a save by Nardi. Cafarelli made it 3-0 at 41:04 with an unassisted score, her 14th goal of the season.

The Purple Knights, who finish the season at 10-9, made it 3-1 on a goal by Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn.) with an assist from Johanne Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H.).

Cardini scored her 14th goal of the season, with an assist from Cafarelli, to increase the Southern lead to 4-1 before St. Michael’s Ashley Brown (New Boston, N.H.) converted on a penalty corner with an assist from Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J.).

Goalkeeper Casey Sanford (North Haven, Conn.) made five saves for the Owls, who held a 17-10 edge in shots.  Nardi had nine saves for the Purple Knights.
