COLCHESTER, Vt. – Stonehill College held off the University of Massachusetts Lowell to claim team titles at the 2004 Northeast-10 Conference Cross Country Championships on Sunday on the Saint Michael’s College campus.

In the women’s five-kilometer race, Stonehill placed five of the top eight runners and cruised to its fifth straight conference title. Individually, Bryant University’s Paula Klepadlo (Smithfield, R.I.) earned her second consecutive league championship, finishing in 17:51.3 to hold off University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Nicole Plante (North Adams, Mass.) by 3.5 seconds. Stonehill, led by Diana Chivakos (South Hamilton, Mass.), claimed the next four spots to hold off UMass Lowell and Bentley College for the crown.

In the men’s eight-kilometer race, the Chieftains claimed their first conference championship by edging two-time defending champion UMass Lowell by three points. Despite finishing in second, the River Hawks earned the top-two individual results, as Chris Kapfer (Tualatin, Ore.) edged reigning league champion Patrick Morasse (Lowell, Mass.) by just three-tenths of a second, clocking in at 24:40.6. Bentley’s Ryan Agnew (Spencer, Mass.) finished third, while Stonehill’s Sean McKeon (Millbury, Mass.) earned fourth to lead the league titlists.

Earning Coach of the Year honors for both the men and women was Stonehill head coach Karen Boen, as she claimed her fifth straight Women’s Coach of the Year award. Klepadlo and Kapfer won Runner of the Year plaques for the women and men, respectively, while Le Moyne College’s Alison Lesher (Sherrill, N.Y.) and Stonehill’s Khalid Abdi (Brockton, Mass.) earned Freshman of the Year honors.

For the host Purple Knights, junior Kim Fahner (Westminster, Vt./Vermont Academy) led the women’s squad with a 41st-place finish, while on the men’s side, sophomore Tom Lichtenberger (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) earned Third Team All-Conference honors by placing 20th.
