Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Meghan Segar (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) scored her third game-winning goal of the season in the final home game of her career as Saint Michael’s College blanked American International College, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.
With the win, Saint Michael’s (8-10, 8-8 NE-10), ranked 10th nationally, clinched the fifth seed in the NE-10 playoffs, and will visit fourth-seeded and ninth-ranked Stonehill College on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Stonehill and Saint Michael’s split the season series, with each team recording a 1-0 win on its home field.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Lindsay Brancaleone (Gloucester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) scored off of an assist from freshman Chelsea Kimball (North Berwick, Maine/Noble), while senior Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) stopped three shots for her fourth shutout of the season.
For the Yellow Jackets, freshman Cindy Armand (Danvers, Mass.) recorded six saves. AIC completes its season 2-16, 2-14 in conference play.
The hosts opened the scoring 14:27 into the contest, as Saint Michael’s took advantage of Armand trapping the ball under her body, resulting in a penalty stroke. Segar wristed a shot to Armand’s left for her third career goal, all of which are game-winning penalty strokes this season.
The Purple Knights added an insurance goal 9:08 into the second half, as Brancaleone earned her first career goal, and Kimball her first career point. Saint Michael’s held off the Yellow Jackets from there, as the hosts allowed just one penalty corner in the second half.
Saint Michael’s and Stonehill will meet in the NE-10 Quarterfinals for the second straight season. The Purple Knights bested the Chieftains in overtime last year to advance to the conference semifinals.
