SMC enters NE-10 Playoffs as fifth seed, to visit Southern Connecticut in quarterfinals

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – The University of Massachusetts Lowell stretched its winning streak to 15 games with a 3-0 victory versus Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For the River Hawks, ranked third in Tuesday’s STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches’ Poll, senior Courtney Hill (Newburyport, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist, while senior Taylor Kloss (Georgetown, Mass.) and junior Sara Hohenberger (Windham, N.H.) also scored. Junior Nicole Staiti (Barre, Mass.) stopped the only shot she faced for UMass Lowell (17-2, 15-1 NE-10).
For Saint Michael’s (10-8, 10-6 NE-10), ranked ninth in the national poll, junior Tina Nardi (Rupert, Vt./Salem Central) turned aside five shots. The contest marked the final home game for seven Purple Knight seniors: Ashley Brown (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown Area), April Cioffi (Rutland, Vt./Rutland), Amber Holcomb (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), Emma Kosciak (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable), Meg McCarthy (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg), Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug), and Johanne Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional).
UMass Lowell opened the scoring 20 minutes into the contest, as Hill converted off of a penalty corner for her ninth goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 until just 15 minutes left in the second half, as Hohenberger connected for her team-leading 19th goal off of an assist from freshman Michelle Harrington (Rockport, Mass./Rockport). The River Hawks sealed the victory with less than four minutes to go, as Hill fed Kloss for her ninth goal of the year.
Saint Michael’s was outshot 10-1 in the contest, and UMass Lowell held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Wednesday, as the fifth-seeded Purple Knights visit fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut State University in the NE-10 Quarterfinals. UMass Lowell has clinched the top seed in the NE-10 Playoffs, and will host the winner of Wednesday’s Saint Michael’s-Southern Connecticut contest on Saturday.
