Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Gabe Wood (Tacoma, Wash.) scored three goals in the opening 4:21 as Middlebury College cruised past Saint Michael’s College, 7-0, in men’s soccer action on Tuesday at Doc Jacobs Field.
For the Panthers, junior David Lee (Mendham, N.J.), sophomore David LaRocca (Sparta, N.J.) and freshmen Baer Fisher (Kenilworth, Ill.) and James Giampietro (Seattle, Wash.) tallied goals. Junior Zack Toth (Carlisle, Mass.) and freshman Brian Bush (Madison, Wis.) each stopped one shot in 45 minutes of play for Middlebury (8-2), which snapped a two-game losing skid.
For the Purple Knights, senior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) recorded two saves. Saint Michael’s (5-10-1) was blanked for the eighth time this season, and completed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 2-3 record.
Wood wasted little time in sealing the victory for the Panthers, as he struck for goals on the first three shots of the game at 1:34, 2:58 and 4:21 of the first half. Middlebury struck for three more goals, all unassisted, before halftime to push its margin to 6-0 at intermission.
Saint Michael’s stayed with Middlebury for much of the second half, as the Purple Knights outshot the Panthers 5-4 in the period. However, Saint Michael’s was blanked for the second straight contest, and Middlebury completed the scoring with 10 minutes remaining.
Saint Michael’s returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday at Bentley College at 3 p.m., and plays its final game of the regular season on Wednesday, October 26 versus the College of Saint Rose at 2:30 p.m.
