Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Carolyn Cooney’s (Flemington, N.J.) unassisted goal in the 61st minute was the difference as Stonehill College upset Saint Michael’s College, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.
For the Chieftains, freshman Alex Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.) stopped four shots, all in the second half, for her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. Stonehill (5-6-1, 4-6-1 NE-10) has won two in a row following a five-game losing skid.
For the Purple Knights, freshman Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) recorded 10 saves, seven of which came after intermission. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Saint Michael’s (8-6-2, 5-6-1 NE-10).
Stonehill dictated play for much of the contest, as the visitors recorded a 20-7 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in the first half. However, neither team could find the back of the net until Cooney tallied her third goal of the season with 29:15 left in regulation.
The Chieftains had two quality chances to seal the win in the closing minutes. However, Goldman recorded a diving save in the 69th minute to keep the Purple Knights alive, and freshman Lauren Boyd (Sandwich, Mass.) missed an open net for Stonehill with eight minutes remaining.
Saint Michael’s is off until Oct. 23 when it plays a 2 p.m. contest at American International College before hosting its final game of the season on Oct. 27 versus Bryant University at 2:30 p.m.
