Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Usiel Vazquez (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals as Southern Connecticut State University remained undefeated with a 7-1 win versus Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. The Owls, ranked third nationally, won their fifth straight contest and improve to 12-0-2 overall (9-0-1 NE-10), while Saint Michael’s (4-10-1, 1-10-0 NE-10) dropped its 10th straight contest following a 4-0-1 start.
For Southern Connecticut, senior Mateus dos Anjos (Astoria, N.Y.), juniors Ilias Calaitzidis (Brossard, Quebec) and Jordan Russolillo (Middletown, Conn.), and freshmen Christian Kabeya (West Montreal, Quebec) and Sean Keane (Ontario, Canada) each tallied goals. Freshmen Timothy Doheny (Wayne, N.J.) and Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) stopped one shot apiece.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Glenn Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington Memorial) notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Junior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) and freshman Tim Williamson (Wakefield, R.I./Barrington) each recorded three saves.
Dos Anjos opened the scoring for the Owls 12 minutes into the contest, but the hosts evened the contest midway through the first half, scoring just the seventh goal Southern Connecticut has allowed this season. The Owls, however, erupted for three goals in a 10-minute span late in the opening period to take a 4-1 lead at halftime, then sealed the victory with three more goals in the second frame.
Saint Michael’s visits in-state rival Middlebury College on Thursday before hosting its final two games of the season: versus Saint Anselm College on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m., and against Merrimack College on Oct. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
