Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Meghan Segar (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) and junior Amber Holcomb (Essex Jct., Vt./Essex) tallied second-half goals as Saint Michael’s College blanked Assumption College, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.
For the Purple Knights, ranked ninth nationally, junior Johanne Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) and sophomore Ashley Webb (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) assisted on Holcomb’s insurance goal. Senior Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) stopped five shots for her third shutout of the season for Saint Michael’s (7-9, 7-7 NE-10).
Senior Colleen Haughey (Valhalla, N.Y.) recorded 11 saves, eight in the second half, for Assumption (6-11, 5-9 NE-10).
Following an evenly-played first half, Saint Michael’s controlled the play throughout much of the second stanza. The hosts opened the scoring 6:21 into the period, as Segar took advantage of a Greyhounds’ penalty deep in their defensive zone and wristed a penalty stroke to Haughey’s left. The goal was Segar’s second of the season, both game-winning penalty strokes versus Assumption.
The Purple Knights sealed the victory with 2:19 left in regulation, as the Purple Knights scored on their 18th and final penalty corner of the contest. Assumption, meanwhile, totaled just five penalty corners in the game, all in the first half.
Saint Michael’s can clinch a spot in the NE-10 playoffs when it visits Merrimack College on Wednesday at 3 p.m., before hosting its regular-season finale versus American International College on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.
