VERMONT CRUISES TO TITLE AT SAINT MICHAEL’S TRI-MEET

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The University of Vermont cruised to individual and team titles at a tri-meet versus Saint Michael’s College and Lyndon State College on Friday on the Saint Michael’s campus.

In the women’s five-kilometer race, the top nine finishers were Catamounts as UVM totaled 15 points. Saint Michael’s was second with 58 points, and Lyndon State third with 69 points. Diana Purtz won the race in 18:43, with teammate Heather Mitchell 20 seconds back.

For the Purple Knights, junior Kim Fahner (Westminster, Vt./Vermont Academy) placed 10th in 20:49, while freshman Courtney Richard (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) was 11th in 20:53. Junior Jaime Deacon (Chester, Mass./Wahconah Regional) finished 17th in 21:26, while classmate Liz Gray (Westmoreland, N.H./Keene) earned 18th in 21:30.

In the men’s eight-kilometer race, Vermont held off Lyndon State, finishing with 35 points. The Hornets, with three of the top four runners, were second with 38 points, followed by Saint Michael’s with 58 points. Vermont’s Brad Allen cruised to the individual title in a time of 24:56, winning by 38 seconds.

Saint Michael’s was led by sophomore Tom Lichtenberger (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic), who finished sixth in 26:19. Junior Paul Wagner (Woods Hole, Mass./Suffield Academy) was seventh at 26:30, and classmate Lionel Welch (Worthington, Mass./Wahconah Regional) earned ninth place in 26:38.

Saint Michael’s returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 24, as the Purple Knights host the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The women kick things off at 10:30 a.m., with the men’s race beginning at 11:30 a.m.
