UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT TAKES TEAM TITLES AT SMC INVITATIONAL

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – The University of Vermont cruised to a first place finish on the women’s side, and held off Lyndon State College on the men’s side, in a four-team meet hosted by Saint Michael’s College on Friday on campus.
In the women’s race, UVM sophomore Diana Purtz (Powell, Ohio) cruised to the individual title, finishing 52 seconds ahead of senior teammate Tessa Auwarter (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in a time of 18:10 for five kilometers. Vermont placed the first 11 runners, with Lyndon State clocking in at 12th and 13th. However, Saint Michael’s was deeper than Lyndon State, and held off the Hornets by just one point for second place, 71 points to 72.
For the Purple Knights, senior Kim Fahner (Westminster, Vt./Vermont Academy) led the way, finishing 19th out of 45 runners in 20:32. Sophomore Courtney Richard (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) was 20th in 20:42, freshman Mary Lynn Denholm (Sparks, Md./Okemo Mountain School) placed 24th in 21:00, senior Jessie Sedore (Craftsbury, Vt./Craftsbury) finished 29th in 21:45, and sophomore Bridget Craig (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) was 31st in 22:19.
On the men’s side, Lyndon senior Ryan Robitaille (Barton, Vt.) held off UVM senior Brad Allen (Morrisville, Vt.) by one second, clocking in at 25:41 for eight kilometers, to win the individual title, but Vermont’s deeper squad helped the Catamounts edge the Hornets for the team title, 31 points to 33. Lyndon’s Jeremiah Bias (West Burke, Vt.) was third, 11 seconds behind Robitaille, while Saint Michael’s junior Thomas Lichtenberger (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) was fourth in a time of 26:15.
Also for the Purple Knights, who finished with 71 points, senior Lionel Welch (Worthington, Mass./Wahconah Regional) was 14th out of 56 runners in 27:27, sophomore James Heelan (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) placed 19th in 27:44, freshman Will Manning (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) finished 25th in 28:25, and classmate Brendan Johnson (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) was 30th in 28:47.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Sunday, October 23, as the Purple Knights take part in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, hosted by Bryant University. The men’s race starts at 10 a.m., followed by the women at 11 a.m.
