COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men’s soccer team (5-8-1, 3-6-1 NE-10) won a battle with Southern New Hampshire University (8-5-1, 4-4-1 NE-10) on Wednesday, by a final score of 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference action at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights, who beat SNHU for the first time since 1986, were able to put an end to the two game win streak strung together by the Penmen, who, coming into Wednesday’s match, had allowed just one goal in their previous five games, dating back to September 24.

After playing a scoreless tie for the first 76 minutes of the game, a corner kick by Mitsuhiro Hamakawa (Chiba, Japan/Gakushuin University) found defender Kimoi Seale (Brooklyn, N.Y./Prospect Heights), who then sent it over to freshman Scott Hinman (New Hartford, Conn./Northwestern Regional), who was able to find daylight in the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

For Southern New Hampshire, sophomore goaltender Dan Pelc (Hamilton, Ont./St. Thomas More) kept his team close throughout the game by turning away six shots, but Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) countered with seven saves for the Purple Knights, five of which came in the second half en route to the senior’s fourth shutout of the season.

The Penmen had a few prime scoring opportunities set up by Saint Michael’s penalties in their own zone late in the game, but indirect kicks by Romelle Burgess (St. Michael, Barbados) were never able to find the right lane.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, as the Penmen travel to Le Moyne to take on the Dolphins at 2:30 p.m. and the Purple Knights travel to Franklin Pierce and will play the Ravens at 2:00 p.m.
