Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Mary Rogers’ (Watertown, Mass.) unassisted goal with 4:30 left in double overtime lifted Bentley College past Saint Michael’s College, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Wednesday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For the Falcons, ranked fifth in Tuesday’s STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches’ Poll, junior Kristen Allen (Portland, Maine) added a goal and an assist, while freshman Danielle Marquis (Greenfield, Mass.) also scored. Senior Kristen Johnson (Reading, Mass.) stopped four shots, all in overtime, as Bentley (11-4, 10-3 NE-10) snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 3-1 in overtime games this year.
For the Purple Knights, ranked ninth in the national poll, senior Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) and freshman Jessica Finlay (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) scored off of assists from junior Lindsay Brancaleone (Gloucester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore Chelsea Kimball (North Berwick, Maine/Noble), respectively. Junior Tina Nardi (Rupert, Vt./Salem Central) turned aside three shots for Saint Michael’s (9-6, 9-4 NE-10), which lost for just the third time in its last 12 contests.
Bentley wasted little time in scoring, as just 2:02 into the contest, Allen notched her eighth goal of the season off of an assist from junior Lindsey Harrington (Atkinson, N.H.). Midway through the first half, the Falcons doubled their lead on Marquis’ first career goal. Saint Michael’s cut its deficit in half 3:15 before halftime on Finlay’s first career score, and the Purple Knights trailed by just one at halftime despite a 10-0 disadvantage in penalty corners in the period.
The Purple Knights quickly evened the score in the second stanza, as Pickman’s team-leading sixth goal of the season just 2:50 into the period evened the score. After neither team scored in the first overtime, both teams had prime opportunities to score in the second extra session. Saint Michael’s senior co-captain Meg McCarthy’s (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) defensive save of a Rogers’ breakaway shot two minutes into the second overtime kept the Purple Knights alive, but Rogers got revenge 8:30 later with her league-leading 20th goal of the season.
Saint Michael’s plays its next two games on the road (at Merrimack College on Saturday and at Saint Anselm College on October 20) before hosting its regular-season finale versus fourth-ranked University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday, October 22 at 1 p.m. Bentley visits Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
