Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College scored once in each half and held off Saint Anselm College, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. The win was the 51st for Marcel Choquette in his head coaching career for the Purple Knights, as the sixth-year coach moves within one of matching the program record, set by Azzie Azagoh Kouadio from 1988-96.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Charlotte Dzerkacz (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) and junior Judy Cronin (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) tallied goals coming off of the bench. Freshman Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) stopped four shots for her second shutout of the season for Saint Michael’s (7-5-2, 4-5-1 NE-10).
Senior Kathryn Mullin (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded three saves for Saint Anselm (5-9-0, 1-9-0 NE-10), which lost its fifth straight contest.
Playing with the wind at its back in the first half, Saint Michael’s opened the scoring with just 56 seconds left in the stanza. Senior Jess Mulson (Rensselaer, N.Y./Holy Names) lofted an indirect kick inside the box, which freshman Laura Wesley (Chula Vista, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) headed off of the crossbar. The rebound went to Dzerkacz, who tallied her first goal of the season.
The Purple Knights added a key insurance goal midway through the second half, as Cronin notched her fourth goal of the season off of assists from sophomores Mary Bullis (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) and Jenn Kerns (Waltham, Mass./Waltham).
Saint Anselm’s best scoring chance came with five minutes remaining, but sophomore Nicole Dunn’s (Plymouth, Mass.) sharp header was caught by Goldman.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Monday at nationally-ranked and undefeated College of Saint Rose, before returning home to face Stonehill College on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 12 p.m.
