Two goals in 57-second span seal victory for Owls

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Southern Connecticut State University scored twice in a 57-second span midway through the second half to seal a 3-0 victory versus Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For the Owls, senior Chrisina DelBuono (Wolcott, Conn.) notched a goal and an assist, while junior Allison Ahearn (Farmingville, N.Y.) and sophomore Molly Desjarlais (North Windham, Conn.) also scored. Junior Stephanie McGinley (Naugatuck, Conn.) stopped one shot for her fifth shutout of the season for Southern Connecticut (9-3-1, 5-3-1 NE-10).
For the Purple Knights, sophomores Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) and Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) each played one half in goal, with Cole stopping two shots in suffering the loss and Goldman not recording a save. Saint Michael’s (4-9-0, 2-8-0 NE-10) lost its second straight contest.
Southern Connecticut opened the scoring with 11 minutes remaining in the first half, as Ahearn corralled a loose ball in front of the Purple Knights’ goal and headed a shot past Cole for her sixth goal of the season. Saint Michael’s managed just two shots in the opening period, both in the final five minutes of the stanza.
The Owls clinched the victory midway through the second half, as Desjarlais doubled Southern Connecticut’s lead with her third goal of the season off of an assist from DelBuono, and less than a minute later, DelBuono slipped a shot past Goldman for her team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Southern New Hampshire University, and hosts Assumption College in its final home contest of the season on Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m. Southern Connecticut next plays at Assumption College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
