EIGHTH-RANKED FIELD HOCKEY BLANKS ASSUMPTION, 3-0
Defense leads the way as SMC wins for ninth time in last 11 contests

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Defense led the way as Saint Michael’s College blanked Assumption College, 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For the Purple Knights, junior Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J./Mount Saint Mary’s Academy), sophomore Hannah Wolfe (Bow, N.H./Bow) and freshman Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) each scored, while senior Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) and sophomore Chelsea Kimball (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) added an assist apiece. Junior Tina Nardi (Rupert, Vt./Salem Central) stopped one shot as Saint Michael’s (9-5, 9-3 NE-10), ranked eighth in Tuesday’s STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches’ Poll, won for the ninth time in its last 11 contests.
For the Greyhounds, junior Kaitlin Burke (Falmouth, Mass.) turned aside five shots as Assumption (7-6, 6-6 NE-10) was shutout for the fourth time this season, and second time by Saint Michael’s.
The Purple Knights opened the scoring just 4:32 into the contest, as Wolfe redirected a pass from Pickman for her third goal of the season. The Purple Knights held Assumption without a shot or a penalty corner attempt in the first half, but failed to add to their 1-0 advantage.
Saint Michael’s doubled its lead 4:05 into the second stanza, as Slaven notched an unassisted goal off of a penalty corner for her fifth goal of the year. Dewey completed the scoring with less than 13 minutes to play, connecting off of a pass from Kimball for her fifth goal of the season. Assumption, meanwhile, did not record its first penalty corner or shot attempt until the 54th minute of play.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. with a key home contest against fourth-ranked league rival Bentley College. Assumption visits Franklin Pierce College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
